Caregivers and Minor Patients in Oklahoma

How caregiver licenses work in Oklahoma and what's required for minor patients — including the two-physician rule and parental responsibilities.

Most patients apply for themselves, but Oklahoma also provides for caregivers and for minor patients who need extra safeguards. Here’s how those work.

Minor patients

A patient under 18 can be licensed, but the bar is higher than for adults:

  • Two physician recommendations are required, rather than one.
  • A parent or legal guardian must be designated as the minor’s caregiver and apply on their behalf.

Caregiver licenses

A caregiver license authorizes a designated adult to purchase, transport, and handle medical cannabis for a patient who needs help — a minor, or an adult patient who is homebound or otherwise unable to manage it alone. The caregiver must be at least 18 and is tied to a specific patient through OMMA.

Getting started

Both paths begin with a physician evaluation — two of them for a minor. Find recommending physicians in the directory, and confirm a provider is comfortable handling minor or caregiver applications before you book.

Frequently asked questions

Can minors get a medical card in Oklahoma?
Yes, but the requirements are stricter. A minor patient application requires recommendations from two physicians, and a parent or legal guardian must serve as the designated caregiver.
What is a caregiver license?
A caregiver license lets a designated adult purchase and handle medical cannabis on behalf of a patient who needs assistance — such as a minor or a homebound patient.
Who can be a caregiver?
An adult (18 or older) designated by the patient (or, for a minor, the parent/legal guardian), who applies through OMMA to act on the patient's behalf.
