Few states have changed course on cannabis as fast — or as dramatically — as Oklahoma. Here's the story in one timeline.

The prohibition era

For most of the last century, Oklahoma was known for some of the strictest cannabis penalties in the nation. The shift, when it came, was sudden.

2018 — SQ 788

Voters approved State Question 788, legalizing medical marijuana with no list of qualifying conditions — instantly one of the most accessible programs in the country.

2019 — The Unity Bill

The Legislature passed HB 2612, building the regulatory framework and the agency that became the OMMA.

2019–2022 — The Green Rush

With no license caps, the market exploded into thousands of businesses, then crashed under its own oversupply — the boom and bust that still defines the market.

2022 — The moratorium

Lawmakers paused new commercial licenses to let regulation and enforcement catch up.

2023 — Recreational rejected

State Question 820, which would have legalized adult-use cannabis, failed at the ballot box. Oklahoma remains medical-only.

Today

Oklahoma runs a large, competitive, medical-only market. To put the history into practice, start with the law as it stands today or find a licensed dispensary.
